BOTOX® Cosmetic

Aging is inevitable, but the telltale signs don’t have to be. BOTOX® Cosmetic is one of the most recognized and accepted aesthetic treatments known to men and women across the globe. This injectable is a neuromodulator that tells the nerves in your muscles to stop sending contraction signals to areas that might cause noticeable wrinkles. By limiting the activity in the muscles, patients can “freeze their youth” in place and achieve a healthy, refreshed appearance.

What Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Achieve?

Elimination of Wrinkles & Creases

BOTOX® Cosmetic injections target the expression-causing wrinkles that develop with repeated facial movements like blinking and squinting. While these lines and wrinkles are initially only noticeable when the muscles are contracted, they seem to stay once you’ve reached a certain age. It can be nearly impossible to stop these often involuntary movements; however, BOTOX® Cosmetic works to relax the muscles that cause wrinkles and deep lines in the eye and forehead area.

Minimization of Frown Lines

As your facial tissues begin to lose the elastin and collagen that supports the skin’s strong response to your ever-moving facial muscles, you are often left with smile lines, frown lines, and expression lines around the eyes and mouth that remain after we are long done making that expression. BOTOX® Cosmetic causes these frown lines and more to temporarily soften or disappear.

Preservation of Youth

Eyes are an essential element to the harmony of your face. Without youthful, alert eyes, your appearance can immediately look tired, worn, and uninviting. That is why BOTOX® Cosmetic is a powerful tool for freezing this area in time, preventing crow’s feet from forming creases that extend from the corners of the eyes. BOTOX® Cosmetic injections can smooth out these wrinkles and revitalize the eyes and brows of all facial types.

How Is BOTOX® Cosmetic Injected?

At Grotting and Cohn Plastic Surgery, we believe that patients should follow the Birmingham, Alabama, guidelines to only receive BOTOX® Cosmetic from a board-certified surgeon, such as Dr. Grotting or Dr. Cohn.

During your consultation, your surgeon will assess your facial anatomy, questions, and goals to determine the amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic required and the best placement for your injections.

In addition, you will:

  • Discuss your general health status
  • Discuss additional facial rejuvenation treatments, if applicable

Your BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment will begin with a tiny needle that will be used to inject botulinum toxin into the targeted muscles. While it may sound dangerous to inject a toxin, it should be noted that the components of BOTOX® Cosmetic are not “toxic” in the general sense. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a completely purified substance derived from a protein made by the clostridium botulinum bacterium. This neuromodulator blocks chemical signals from the nerves that cause muscles to contract.

As the muscles relax, the wrinkles and fine lines begin to smooth in that area. A numbing cream may be applied to the treated area to ease any temporary discomfort.

Besides treating signs of aging on the upper face, BOTOX® Cosmetic can also:

  • Minimize superficial lines or “cords” in the neck
  • Smooth skin “dimpling” over the chin
  • Eliminate lipstick “bleed” by softening distracting fine lines around the mouth
  • Soften a square-like or angular jawline

It is common to combine BOTOX® Cosmetic with other facial rejuvenation techniques to provide greater harmony.

Procedures commonly combined with BOTOX® Cosmetic include:

  • Med Spa treatments: We offer clinical-grade facials, skin therapies, and state-of-the-art laser treatments. Our Med Spa has everything you need to enjoy the full potential of your beauty. Using BOTOX® Cosmetic, in combination with these powerful tools, will only further your aesthetic results.
  • Brow lift surgery: By relaxing the muscles that pull the outer part of the eyebrow down, a more youthful eyebrow shape can be obtained. While BOTOX® Cosmetic can reduce expression-causing lines and wrinkles, it cannot address loose or sagging skin the way that brow lift surgery can.
  • Eyelid lift surgery: Patients who undergo eyelid lift surgery will find a noticeable reduction in the worn, tired bags that surround the upper and lower eyelids. By incorporating BOTOX® Cosmetic, patients can alleviate the noticeability of surrounding wrinkles and expression lines that aren’t affected by the lift.

What Are Your Concerns About BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a non-surgical facial injection that requires little to no downtime. After your injections, you should avoid touching or rubbing (massaging) the treatment areas. Patients should also avoid any activities that require intense blood flow to the face, an elevated heart rate, or any intense physical activity for at least the remainder of the day. The injections may cause swelling and bruising, so it is important to provide your body time to rest and repair the treated area. Once this is complete, you can return to all normal activities.

BOTOX® Cosmetic uses an extremely fine needle to inject the product. The skin will be punctured, yet no scars are left behind.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is priced according to the number of injections a patient receives, the areas being treated, and the number of neuromodulator “units” needed to make significant adjustments to the face. A consultation is needed to get a clearer understanding of the treatment cost.

Pain is relative to each patient’s previous experiences; nonetheless, BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are most commonly known to be painless. Minimal swelling, bruising, and redness might occur but will dissipate within a few hours or days.

Frequently Asked Questions

BOTOX® Cosmetic cannot cause permanent damage, as the BOTOX® Cosmetic injected in the body will only be temporary. At most, BOTOX® Cosmetic will last three to six months. Any negative side effects should subside as soon as the effects of the BOTOX® Cosmetic wear off.

The onset of the nerve acting agents typically takes 24 to 72 hours, although it may take up to one week to see the full effects. BOTOX® Cosmetic works on the body’s nerve receptors. Since everyone has unique physiological differences, some patients may have more of these nerve receptors than others. This allows the BOTOX® Cosmetic to bind more quickly in some individuals, giving more noticeable results sooner.

While BOTOX® Cosmetic may produce unfavorable results with poor technique, the licensed and medically trained professionals at Grotting and Cohn Plastic Surgery have a deep understanding of the product and extensive experience with facial anatomy. With our expertise, you will look natural and like yourself.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is made from a neurotoxin that inhibits muscle movement in the face to smooth lines and prevents the further development of wrinkles. Fillers are substances that correct facial volume loss by filling the areas of hollowness or fine lines.

We use several different neuromodulator agents, including Dysport®, XEOMIN®, and Jeuveau®. All of them work similarly but also have unique properties. Your doctors at Grotting and Cohn may recommend one or another agent based on your needs. If you have used any of them previously and one agent seems to work well for you, we will often keep you on that program. We want to tailor specific programs that are suited to individual patient needs and desires.
